Data collection and processingCover collects data from your phone to provide you with easy access to the right apps at the right time. For example, Cover might notice that you tend to check the weather at home in the morning, your calendar when you get to work, and maps when you’re in your car. Cover provides you with quick access to these apps in each context. In order to do this, Cover records the following items:
- The list of apps installed on your phone, including which apps are on your homescreen and dock
- The number of times you run an app, including the time and place where you ran it (specifically, the cell tower or wifi network you were connected to, or that you were located within a geographic area you identified such as home or work)
- The number of times you turn on your phone (i.e. view your Cover lockscreen), and what you do subsequently: launch an app, slide open the cover, or simply turn the screen back off (e.g. just glance at the clock).
- Information from connected Bluetooth devices, such as the Bluetooth device ID of your car.
- Information from the sensors in your phone, such as the accelerometer, gyroscope, and GPS (though GPS is used exceptionally sparingly in order to save your battery).
In addition to data that Cover collects automatically, you may be able to provide certain information to us like your email address or your home or work address. Some of the data and information we collect can always be used to identify you (such as your email address), while other data and information (such as your location or how often you use a certain app) can only be used to identify you when combined with other information. As described below, we also use some of this data and information in an anonymous or aggregate form that does not identify you personally, in order to improve our services and work with our partners.
At any time, if you don’t want the data we collect to be associated with your email address, you can select “Don’t store my email address” (in Settings). If you make this selection, your data will instead be stored with a unique identifier generated from your phone (not your phone number or Android Device ID).
If you choose to enter any address(es), we store that information in an encrypted form, along with the wifi networks (SSIDs) that your device is connected to at those locations.
If you use the feedback function (in Settings), it will automatically include your email address and technical details in a message that is sent to us using one of the email accounts configured in your phone. This type of information makes it possible for us to view your data and help you with your problem. You can provide anonymous feedback by using an email account that does not reveal your identity.
Cover may automatically receive and record information on our server logs from your browser or device through the use of “cookies”. “Cookies” are identifiers we transfer to your browser or device that allow us to recognize your browser or device and tell us how and when pages and features in our product or services are visited and by how many people. You can change the preferences on your browser or device to prevent or limit your device’s acceptance of cookies, but this may prevent you from taking advantage of some of our features.
Android PermissionsCover requires a number of Android permissions, all of which are presented before you download Cover from Google Play. Most are straightforward, but to be crystal clear about any permissions that might raise an eyebrow, here are how the permissions for SMS, Gmail, Phone, and Contacts are used.
- SMS and MMS permissions
- Used to update the unread message count on your lockscreen and to display message snippets. Message content is not sent to our servers.
- Gmail permission
- Used to update the unread email count on your lockscreen. Email content is not sent to our servers.
- Phone permissions
- Used to display missed call notifications and to hide Cover when you get an incoming phone call.
- Contacts permission
- Used to show contact names for SMSs you receive and phone calls that you miss (when these are shown on the lockscreen).
Other data usageWe may use the information we collect about you in an anonymized way or combine it with the data of other users in an anonymized, aggregated way to improve our algorithms, measure service usage, publish summaries online or offline, and to develop new features such as recognizing popular apps. We may also use your data to identify apps, products and services that may be of interest to you so that we can recommend them to you through Cover. We will not display information where individual users can be recognized. Furthermore, our developers need to occasionally review raw data and the results to improve the system. They will not see your email address or saved address(es) along with the data, as that information is stored separately. We may also share your anonymized or aggregated information with third parties such as vendors, partners, agents, or advertisers.
The security of our systemsWe use third party vendors and hosting partners to provide the necessary hardware, software, networking, storage, and related technology required to provide the service. By submitting your personal data, you agree to this. We use commercially reasonable physical and technical safeguards to secure your data. We encrypt the communication channels using SSL. However, we cannot guarantee the security of your data, which may be compromised by unauthorized entry or use, hardware or software failure, and other factors.
Your access to the dataAt the moment, you can only access the data by using the app, i.e. you cannot export your data from our system. If you require your data to be deleted, please send a request to email@example.com.
